Computerized Medical Diagnosis of Melanocytic Lesions based on the ABCD approach

چکیده
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer and is caused by the uncontrolled growth of atypical melanocytes. In recent decades, computer aided diagnosis is used to support medical professionals; however, there is still no globally accepted tool. In this context, similar to state-of-the-art we propose a system that receives a dermatoscopy image and provides a diagnostic if the lesion is benign or malignant. This tool is composed with next modules: Preprocessing, Segmentation, Feature Extraction, and Classification. Preprocessing involves the removal of hairs. Segmentation is to isolate the lesion. Feature extraction is considering the ABCD dermoscopy rule. The classification is performed by the Support Vector Machine. Experimental evidence indicates that the proposal has 90.63 % accuracy, 95 % sensitivity, and 83.33 % specificity on a data-set of 104 dermatoscopy images. These results are favorable considering the performance of diagnosis by traditional progress in the area of dermatology.

Epiluminescence microscopy for the diagnosis of doubtful melanocytic skin lesions. Comparison of the ABCD rule of dermatoscopy and a new 7-point checklist based on pattern analysis.
OBJECTIVE To compare the reliability of a new 7-point checklist based on simplified epiluminescence microscopy (ELM) pattern analysis with the ABCD rule of dermatoscopy and standard pattern analysis for the diagnosis of clinically doubtful melanocytic skin lesions. DESIGN In a blind study, ELM images of 342 histologically proven melanocytic skin lesions were evaluated for the presence of 7 st...

OBJECTIVE To assess 4 dermoscopy methods in a nonexpert setting. DESIGN Sixty-one medical practitioners, mainly primary care physicians in Australia, were trained in 4 dermoscopy algorithms. Participants then assessed macroscopic and dermoscopic images of 40 melanocytic skin lesions. Each of the dermoscopic images was assessed with pattern analysis, the 7-point checklist, the ABCD rule, and t...
متن کاملValidity of ABCD Rule of Dermoscopy in Clinical Practice.
The ABCD rule of dermoscopy was developed to facilitate the dermoscopic differentiation between benign and malignant melanocytic lesions. However, there is a lack of studies on its validity in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the algorithm used bedside, compared with the accuracy of the preliminary preoperative diagnosis, and to rate physicians' level of ...

BACKGROUND Digital image analysis has been introduced into the diagnosis of skin lesions based on dermoscopic pictures. OBJECTIVES To develop a computer algorithm for the diagnosis of melanocytic lesions and to compare its diagnostic accuracy with the results of established dermoscopic classification rules. METHODS In the Department of Dermatology, University of Tuebingen, Germany, 837 mela...
متن کاملNovice identification of melanoma: not quite as straightforward as the ABCDs.
The "ABCD" mnemonic to assist non-experts' diagnosis of melanoma is widely promoted; however, there are good reasons to be sceptical about public education strategies based on analytical, rule-based approaches--such as ABCD (i.e. Asymmetry, Border Irregularity, Colour Uniformity and Diameter). Evidence suggests that accurate diagnosis of skin lesions is achieved predominately through non-analyt...
